12 years imprisonment for the head of a road company in the case of the Morandi Bridge collapse in Italy

On Thursday, an Italian court sentenced the former CEO of Autostrade Pere L’Italia, the Italian highway operator, to 12 years in prison in the case of the Morandi Bridge collapse that killed 43 people about eight years ago.
The court sentenced Giovanni Castellucci to 12 years in prison, after a trial that lasted four years and deliberations that lasted four hours before the verdict was pronounced.
Castellucci was among dozens of defendants convicted in the case, which revealed serious failures in maintaining Italian infrastructure.
On the morning of August 14, 2018, a 200-meter (650-foot) section of the bridge collapsed during a rainstorm, causing dozens of cars to fall to the ground and killing 43 people.
