Spain is struggling to contain the most difficult fire in its history

Regional authorities described the fire, which broke out about 100 kilometers from Madrid on Thursday and consumed more than 29,000 hectares, as one of the “most complex fires” in the contemporary history of Spain.
This comes with the beginning of a new heat wave, which increases the authorities’ concerns about dealing with the fire that broke out in the province of Guadalajara.
In this context, the President of the Castile Region and the towel, Emiliano Garcia-Baji, said that the fire required the largest mobilization of firefighting teams in the history of the region, after about 600 firefighters and military personnel were called to participate in the suppression operations on the night of Monday – Tuesday, with 29 planes and helicopters operating to combat the fires simultaneously.
He added: “We began to see a glimmer of hope after days of fighting the fire, but it is too early to declare victory,” noting that the firefighting teams largely succeeded in stopping the fire’s advance towards the neighboring Castile and Leon region.
What complicates the process of controlling the fire is that it broke out in an area almost devoid of population, characterized by extreme drought and widespread quantities of neglected forests and plants, which contributed to the rapid spread of the flames, according to what the authorities announced.
For its part, the Forest Fire Control and Prevention Authority (Infocam) announced that about 1,200 people have been evacuated so far, with no deaths or injuries recorded.
On July 9, Spain witnessed one of the deadliest forest fires in its modern history, specifically in the Andalusia region in the south of the country, killing 13 people and destroying about 7,000 hectares of land.
In recent years, Spain has witnessed longer and more frequent heat waves, during which temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius, providing favorable conditions for the outbreak of widespread and destructive forest fires.
