In just 10 days.. 1,000 Ebola cases were recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Ebola is spreading in the east of the country, which has been witnessing a bloody conflict for more than 30 years.
The number of confirmed cases exceeded 2,000 on July 15.
Data published by the country’s authorities on Sunday reported that there were 3,075 cases of the virus in 5 governorates in the country, including 1,354 deaths.
The Congolese authorities stated in this report that the available data allow for more accurate monitoring of the development of cases and deaths, thanks to tangible improvements in detecting and confirming cases.
How the virus is transmitted
The virus is transmitted through close contact and bodily fluids and causes hemorrhagic fever, and over the past 50 years, it has claimed the lives of more than 15,000 people on the African continent.
The most deadly outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo claimed the lives of about 2,300 people out of 3,500 infected between 2018 and 2020.
The seventeenth wave of the virus outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo on May 15, and there is no vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola currently spreading in the country.
The epicenter of the epidemic is in Ituri, a governorate located in northeastern Democratic Congo on the border with South Sudan and Uganda, where about 90% of cases are recorded, according to the World Health Organization.
Developing vaccines and treatments
During the past few days, several hospitals there witnessed strikes by employees demanding their salaries.
Health experts and organizations are seeking to develop vaccines and treatments against the Bundibugyo strain.
The first volunteer received an experimental vaccine against this strain of the Ebola epidemic on Friday, according to Oxford University.
Work is accelerating on developing several other experimental vaccines against this strain with the aim of starting clinical trials on it, while work is underway to develop two treatments.
