"UNESCO" 25 new sites included on the World Heritage List
Busan, July 29, 2017 – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced the inclusion of 25 new sites on the World Heritage List, at the conclusion of the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee, which was held in the city of Busan, Republic of South Korea.
The organization explained that the listing decisions were adopted by consensus, reflecting the spirit of cooperation on which the 1972 World Heritage Convention is based.
The session witnessed, for the first time, the inclusion of sites from the Comoros Islands, Sao Tome and Principe, and South Sudan, in a move aimed at achieving a more balanced representation of the list.
The Committee also included six sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger, bringing the total number of listed sites to 1,273 sites in 173 countries.
The Director-General of UNESCO, Khaled Al-Anani, congratulated the countries that included their new sites, stressing that these sites represent part of the common heritage of humanity and embody the spirit of cooperation on which the World Heritage Convention is based.
