US President Joe Biden will hold a meeting on Sunday with his national security team to discuss developments in Syria, where armed opposition factions announced the fall of President Bashar al-Assad.
National Security Council spokesman Sean Savitt announced on the X platform, “The president will meet with his national security team this morning to receive a briefing on the situation in Syria.”

The situation in Damascus

The armed factions previously announced at dawn on Sunday that they had begun entering the capital, Damascus, hours after they confirmed that they had taken control of the city of Homs, the third largest city in the country.

The factions said in a message posted on their Telegram channel: “Our forces have begun entering the capital, Damascus,” at a time when residents told Agence France-Presse about hearing heavy bursts of bullets in the streets of the capital.
