Germany temporarily stops examining asylum applications for Syrians

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees in Germany has temporarily suspended processing of asylum applications submitted by Syrians.
This came according to what a spokesman for the office said on Monday.

Syrians seeking asylum in Germany

The spokesman explained that this rule does not apply to what is known as the Dublin procedures, in which another country in the European Union is responsible for initiating the asylum request. Rather, this rule applies to all requests in which the conditions in Syria are the decisive factor.
The spokesman stated that the number of pending asylum applications submitted by Syrians currently amounts to more than 47 thousand applications, including 46 thousand and 81 initial applications.
For years, Syria has been one of the most prominent countries from which asylum seekers in Germany originate.

The situation in Syria

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the German Interior Ministry told reporters in Berlin, saying: “The Federal Office is carefully studying each case individually, including evaluating the field situation in the applicant’s home country.”
She explained that the office has the possibility of postponing decisions related to asylum if the situation is unclear, and added that it is clear that the situation in Syria is currently unclear.
In practice, she said, this means that Syrians’ applications will be moved to the bottom of the list, while priority will be given to other asylum applications.

The fall of Bashar al-Assad

On the night before last, Saturday/Sunday night, Syrian opposition groups led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham took control of the Syrian capital, Damascus.
This announced the end of the rule of President Bashar al-Assad’s family, which lasted for more than two decades.
The ousted president fled with his family to Russia, and thousands of Syrians celebrated in the German streets the fall of the regime.
