A discussion session on the role of national human rights institutions

Abu Dhabi, December 17 / WAM / The National Human Rights Commission concluded its participation in the “Human Rights Awareness Week” organized by the Geneva Center for Human Rights and Global Dialogue, by organizing a discussion session in the capital, Abu Dhabi, under the title “The Role of National Human Rights Institutions in Protecting and Promoting Human Rights” in cooperation with the Center.
The session, which coincided with Human Rights Day 2024 under the slogan “Our Rights, Our Future, Immediately” and within the framework of the Authority’s awareness campaign “Know Your Rights”, witnessed the attendance of more than 150 local and international participants from governmental institutions, non-governmental organizations, and specialized academic, intellectual and research institutions. The session was attended by His Excellency Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi, His Excellency Major General Khalifa Hareb Mugheir Al Khaili, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the Cybersecurity Council of the UAE Government, and His Excellency Dr. Sultan Mohammed Al Nuaimi, Director General of the Emirates Center. Also present were Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, Vice President of the National Commission for Human Rights, His Excellency Dr. Saeed Al Ghafli, Secretary-General of the Commission, a number of members of the Board of Trustees, and senior officials from the Geneva Center for Human Rights and Global Dialogue, along with a number of students and human rights specialists from major universities in the country. .
During the session, His Excellency Maqsoud Cruz, Chairman of the National Commission for Human Rights, highlighted the importance of spreading awareness about the most prominent issues related to human rights, pointing out that human rights are related to various aspects of life, especially in light of the technological developments that we are witnessing today, especially applications that rely on… The focus is largely on artificial intelligence, in which data privacy must be taken into account, allowing individuals to be independent and exercise basic human rights in general.
His Excellency stressed the Authority’s keenness to implement qualitative initiatives and create rich discussions that would enhance awareness about the importance of culture and human rights, reflecting its commitment to enhancing international cooperation and applying best practices in this field of human rights.
For his part, Dr. Umesh Balwankar, Executive Director of the Geneva Center for Human Rights and Global Dialogue, pointed to the vital role played by national human rights institutions in protecting and promoting human rights, stressing the importance of concerted efforts at the international level to achieve common human rights goals.
It is noteworthy that the National Commission for Human Rights recently organized a symposium as part of its “Knowledge Lab” initiative, entitled “Introduction to Human Rights and International Human Rights Law,” presented by Dr. Ahmed Al Mansouri, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Commission, with the aim of raising awareness and educating the Commission’s employees on vital topics related to human rights.
The organization of these initiatives comes in line with the Authority’s strategic directions, which revolve around four main files: These are workers’ rights, children’s and women’s rights, the rights of persons with disabilities, and the right to health and mental health. The Commission seeks to enhance awareness about these issues by implementing specific initiatives and launching various human rights programs at the beginning of 2025, including human rights culture episodes “Platforms” on YouTube, Issuing the semi-annual digital magazine “Huqus” and organizing the “Huqoos Oasis” as a regular forum with civil society, in addition to the topics of the “Legislation Lab” and the continuation of the “Knowledge Lab” activities in the legal context.
