Abu Dhabi Environment launches an innovative program for reporting and verifying carbon emissions

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi launched a program to measure, report and verify carbon emissions in accordance with international standards, with the aim of studying carbon pricing mechanisms and the possibility of applying them, as a pivotal step to address carbon emissions and climate change in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi has made great progress in studying the mechanisms of carbon management and trading, and the possibility of applying them as a pivotal step to address carbon emissions and climate change in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates. These efforts represent an important step in aligning Abu Dhabi’s policies with international best practices, and strengthening the country’s commitment to achieving its national and global climate goals. It aims to accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon economy and support sectors that are difficult to decarbonise. Over the past years and during the preparation for the Conference of the Parties (COP28), the Authority has invested significant resources in this field in cooperation with its partners at the federal and local levels, in addition to the private sector.

Studies conducted by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi showed that establishing a local carbon pricing system could support industries, especially the industrial sectors that produce the largest amount of emissions. This program provides the basis for accurate tracking of greenhouse gas emissions, paving the way for implementing an effective carbon management mechanism that contributes to achieving environmental sustainability goals.

The program aims to unify and improve the quality of greenhouse gas emissions inventory reports in the industrial and energy sectors in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and align local efforts with global best practices, to enhance international competitiveness, manage emissions in the long term, support technical innovation and enhance efforts to achieve the goals of the global climate change agenda. In the region.

The program provides reliable data that meets global climate requirements, such as those set by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and is consistent with the enhanced transparency framework of the Paris Agreement, and with international agreements on initiatives aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change, and enhances the results of the UAE agreement approved at the Conference of the Parties. (COP 28).

The program requires that large facilities with high carbon emissions monitor and report their emissions and verify them annually through a third party, with the first reports to be delivered in 2026. The system, target sectors and emissions volume were developed in consultation with stakeholders from the public and private sectors to ensure cooperation. And compatibility.

Dr. Sheikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, said: “Abu Dhabi has strengthened its leadership in the field of climate action by working closely with our partners from government agencies, industry and energy sectors, as we integrate new mandatory measures for measurement, reporting and verification within our broader carbon accounting framework. . Data transparency is vital for evaluating climate policies such as carbon pricing mechanisms, which support Abu Dhabi’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 22% by 2027, and contribute to the emirate’s sustainable economic growth. We are keen to take the necessary steps proactively, in accordance with national paths towards achieving climate neutrality by 2050.”
