The UAE secures 38.2% of Japan’s oil imports in November 2024

Tokyo, December 30, 2024 – Japan’s oil imports from the United Arab Emirates reached 27.16 million barrels, or 38.2% of total imports, in November 2024, according to data from the Natural Resources and Energy Agency of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
During the aforementioned month, Japan imported about 71.18 million barrels of oil, of which the share of Arab oil was 95.1%, or 67.72 million barrels, coming from three Arab countries in addition to the Emirates, which are the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar, in addition to the neutral zone (on the border between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia). , according to the data.
Japan imported 31.49 million barrels from Saudi Arabia, or 44.3% of the total, and approximately 5.19 million barrels from Kuwait, or 7.3%, then Qatar 3.42 million barrels, or 4.8%, and 0.6% from the neutral zone.
It is worth noting that imports from the UAE and Saudi Arabia amounted to 82.5% of Japan’s total oil imports in November 2024, which makes both countries important for Japan to maintain energy security.
The rest of Japan’s oil imports came from Central and South America at a rate of 1.8%, the United States of America at a rate of 1.7%, Australia at a rate of 0.9%, and East Asia at a rate of 0.4%, which shows a record historical increase in Japan’s dependence on the oil of Arab countries. Sanctions continued on Russian and Iranian oil as Japanese companies followed US policy.
The aforementioned figures represent the quantities of oil that arrived at refineries, tanks and warehouses in Japanese ports during November 2024.
Japan uses oil to generate about a third of its energy needs.
