The Communications, Space and Technology Commission and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, starting tomorrow, Wednesday, the first of next January, will begin implementing the mandatory phase of unifying charging ports for mobile phones and electronic devices in the Kingdom, which requires companies and device suppliers to standardize the types of charging ports to be of the “USB” type. Type-C”, in accordance with the technical and administrative requirements stipulated in the relevant technical regulations and standard specifications.

The decision will include mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, portable video game devices, headphones, earphones, amplifiers, keyboards, and computer pointer devices (mouses), in addition to portable navigation systems and portable speakers. And wireless routers.
The second phase will start on April 1, 2026, and includes laptop computers.

Improving users’ experience

The decision to unify the types of charging ports comes with the aim of improving the experience of users in the Kingdom and not burdening them with additional costs, providing high-quality charging and data transfer technology, raising the quality of technical products, in addition to supporting the principles of environmental sustainability, and contributing to achieving the goals of sustainable development by reducing the volume of electronic waste. .
The decision is expected to contribute to reducing the amount of local consumption of chargers and charging cables for mobile phones and electronic devices by more than 2.2 million units annually, in addition to saving spending by consumers in the Kingdom to more than 170 million riyals annually, and achieving the Kingdom’s goals for sustainability in the technology sector. By reducing electronic waste by approximately 15 tons annually.
