"ADNOC Gas" Explores pioneering technology to convert methane into graphene and hydrogen

ADNOC Gas is exploring a pioneering technology to convert methane into graphene and hydrogen
ABU DHABI, 16 JANUARY / WAM / ADNOC Gas PLC, in partnership with Baker Hughes, an energy technology company, announced today its success in applying the “LOOP” technology patented by Levidian, one of the companies. The leader in climate technology in Britain, at the company’s site at the Habshan Gas Processing Complex.
This is the first time that this technology has been applied at a gas processing site, where carbon is captured from methane, the main component of natural gas, and converted into high-quality graphene.
Graphene is considered a promising material that is expected to contribute to shaping the future of many applications in various sectors of industry. Through this technology, it is possible to produce more than a ton of graphene, in addition to a ton of hydrogen annually, which makes it a multi-use innovation that contributes to achieving the set goals. To move towards clean energy sources globally.
It is expected that 15 tons of the two materials will be produced annually if the technology is deployed in other locations.
Mohammed Al Hashemi, Chief Operating Officer at ADNOC Gas, said that the application of “LOOP” technology represents an important achievement for the company, explaining that by converting methane gas into high-quality graphene and cleaner hydrogen, we will extract new value from natural gas and contribute more to removing Carbon, supporting industrial growth, and achieving the goals set for climate neutrality in the country.
He added that this project reflects the company’s efforts to contribute to a more sustainable energy future and provide tangible benefits to the industries sector to which the company provides its services, pointing out that this data collected through this pilot project will help improve the ongoing development of artificial intelligence models and digital twins with the aim of improving performance. And the production of graphene to reduce energy consumption and increase production.
Al Hashemi stressed that artificial intelligence solutions will support graphene quality control, accelerate applications related to the production of this product, enhance efficiency and reduce waste, and demonstrate the implications of carbon removal efforts.
For his part, Alessandro Bresciani, Senior Vice President of Climate Technology Solutions at Baker Hughes, said that this project demonstrates once again that cooperation between the two companies unlocks the possibilities of using new technologies to remove carbon.
He added that employing innovations from startups and research laboratories to change reality in complex industrial sites requires technical skills, a high level of cooperation, and a focus on health, safety, and the environment.
He expressed their pleasure in employing “Levidian” technology in the Habshan complex of ADNOC Gas, as part of Baker Hughes’ focus on bringing innovative solutions to its customers to the market and expanding their scope in the long term.
For his part, John Hartley, CEO of Levidian, said that the company is witnessing a great demand for the graphene material that it manufactures, expressing his enthusiasm to work with “Baker Hughes” and “ADNOC” to explore new sources for the production of this superior material, which will help… Consolidating Levidian’s position as one of the largest producers of graphene in the world with its low carbon intensity, lower cost, and consistent higher quality compared to everything currently available on the market.
He added that ADNOC’s technology team will evaluate the graphene produced at the Habshan complex and ways to use it across various industry sectors.
Graphene has properties that enable it to be used in all industries, from improving the performance of electric car batteries and solar panels, to the possibility of producing materials with greater durability and strength such as concrete, tires and polymer pipes.
