Grande calls for sustainable solutions and international support for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh

This came in a statement after a four -day visit to Bangladesh, where Mr. Grande expressed his gratitude to the country for hosting the Rohingya refugees who fled their homes in Myanmar. He stressed the necessity of “intensifying and supporting” efforts to help create conditions for the return of refugees to their original areas, and peaceful coexistence between the societies that live there.
Meanwhile, the international community urged sustainable financial support to refugees who live in very difficult circumstances, exposed to natural disasters, and they almost completely depend on humanitarian aid to meet their basic needs.
He added: “With the passage of time and in the absence of a solution to the Rohingya refugees at the present time, the mobilization of resources remains difficult and priority. If international support decreases significantly – which may happen – the huge work carried out by the Bangladesh government, relief agencies and refugees themselves will be seriously affected, which exposes thousands of hunger, disease and insecurity.”
The High Commissioner visited the camps in Cox Bazar and spoke to the refugees who arrived recently after fleeing the ongoing violence in Rakhine State in Myanmar. He also met societal groups such as imams, religion teachers and a group of mothers interested in escalating violence in the camps.
He said: “Everyone has shared their longing to return to their homes, when the conditions of return are safe and allow the sustainable voluntary return. It is very important to support Bangladesh’s efforts to maintain security in the camps. We must also continue programs for the most vulnerable groups, especially women who survive violence, and help young people gain skills and the ability to withstand.”
Mr. Grandi also met young people trying “Exploiting their talents to serve their community” At the Skills Training Center. He said that if international aid diminishes, “Their horizon becomes more limited” Stressing that you should “To do our best to keep their hopes alive.”
It is noteworthy that this sixth visit to the High Commissioner to the country, and comes at a time when the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is preparing, in cooperation with the government of Bangladesh and other humanitarian partners, to launch the joint response plan for 2025 – which clarifies the humanitarian needs of the Rohingya refugees and their host societies. In recent years, funding has been a very important challenge, as previous response plans have not been sufficiently funded.
In a post on social media, Mr. Grande said: “There is no place where the role of life -saving human aid is more evident than the Cox Bazar camps.”
