But all of those on board survived, according to officials and witnesses.
The horrific accident occurred around 3 pm on Sunday (1900 GMT) south of Lancaster Airport in the town of Mannheim, according to police chief Dwayne Fischer, who told reporters in an evening statement that all the five victims were transferred to the hospital, but their condition has not yet been revealed.
He also stressed that one of those on the ground was unharmed.
Huge fire ball
Brian Pepkin was driving his car near the site when he noticed that the small plane was rising before it suddenly deviated to the left.
He added in a statement to the Associated Press (AB): The plane was perpendicular to its front, and there was an immediate explosion and a huge firework.
The US Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the stricken plane Bonanza was carrying 5 passengers.
Voice records of the Air Monitoring Tower revealed that the pilot reported the presence of an open door by plane and asked to return to landing.
After the air observer allowed him to do so, one of them heard the recording screaming: “Pull the plane up”, before another person added a few moments: “The plane fell behind the station building, in the car park area.”
The Federal Aviation Administration announced that it would conduct an investigation into the accident.
