Afghanistan: UNICEF warns of severe consequences to continue to deprive girls of their right to education

With the passage of three years since the start of the girls ’education ban in the secondary stage in Afghanistan, a new academic year begins, during which approximately 400,000 additional girls of education will be deprived, bringing the total number to 2.2 million girls. According to UNICEF, this number may reach 4 million girls if the ban continues until 2030.

She said: “If these qualified and smart young girls continue to be deprived of education, the consequences will continue for generations. Afghanistan cannot neglect half of its population.”

Despite the ban, she said that the UN agency provided education for 445,000 children through community learning – 64 percent of them are girls.
