Between reciprocity and dialogue .. How will Mexico deal with Trump’s fees?

Mexico President Claudia Shinbom announced on Monday that her country does not exclude the possibility of imposing mutual customs duties on the United States, her main commercial partner.
“As far as possible, we want to avoid mutual imposition,” Shinbom said at its daily press conference.

Trump’s customs duties on Mexico

US President Donald Trump imposed customs duties on steel, aluminum and cars imported from, but he did not impose mutual customs duties.
Mexico is one of the main affected people as a result of the trade president launched by the US President, as more than 80% of its exports are directed to the United States.

Xinbom stressed that Mexico wants to avoid responding to US customs duties on steel and aluminum, and partly on the automotive industry, because this would lead to “increases in the prices” of these products in Mexico.
“Of course we want to protect the Mexican industry and Mexican companies, but we will see whether we will reach an initial agreement” with the United States.

Mexico was affected by American customs duties

Mexico remained practically immune to the mutual acquaintances announced by Trump on Wednesday, as Washington has kept the products contained in the free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico, exempt from additional fees.
The first impacts of American customs duties began on cars that appear in Mexico, which includes 37 cars, including Audi, BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Stelinsis, Toyota, and Volkswagen, according to the Mexican Auto Industry Association.
The Stelinsis Group announced that it will suspend production at its factory in Toloca, near Mexico, starting this Monday and April, after announcing Thursday the suspension of production in a factory in Kanana.
