“Abu Dhabi Environment” prohibits drilling groundwater wells in specific areas

The Environment Authority – Abu Dhabi issued a decision regarding the identification of the prohibited areas of drilling groundwater wells in the emirate, with the aim of organizing the work of drilling groundwater wells and maintaining the quantity and quality of the groundwater reserves in those areas.

The decision was prepared according to the provisions of Law No. (5) of 2016 regarding the regulation of groundwater in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which gives the authority the authority to define the prohibited areas to dig groundwater wells in it and issue instructions, instructions and procedures necessary to maintain the quality of groundwater and rationalize its consumption, as the authority worked in coordination and cooperation with the relevant authorities to prepare legislation in the emirate.

The provisions of the decision are applied to all groundwater wells within the areas contained in it, where the decision specifies the activities of digging, maintenance and deepening allowed in those areas in addition to the obligations of the well owner of the related requirements and stipulated in the law and its executive regulations, including the requirements for issuing licenses.

The Environment Authority – Abu Dhabi emphasized that the issuance of the decision comes within the framework of developing the legislative system related to preserving the various elements of the environment in the emirate, including groundwater, which contributes to confronting the potential negative environmental effects that can arise as a result of excessive consumption and incompatible practices related to the uses of this water and other activities.

The authority works to implement the requirements of the decision in the emirate in coordination and cooperation with strategic partners and based on systematic and organized measures that would contribute to achieving the desired goals of this decision.
