The Assistant for Services in Jeddah Education, Eng. Wissam Habis, inaugurated, on behalf of the Director General of Education, the activities of the “Learning Cities” forum under the slogan “Life Learning for Life”, organized by the Education Performance Department represented in the Department of Continuing Education, at the Jeddah International College, with the participation of a group of educators and specialists.

The forum aims to shed light on the roles of participants and government agencies in building Jeddah as a global learning city, and to enhance lifelong learning culture by reviewing educational programs and continuing education services.

A global orientation to support development

In his speech, Habis stressed that learning cities represent a global trend adopted by UNESCO to support sustainable development and raise the quality of life, noting that the Kingdom has made tangible progress in this field with the joining of five cities to UNESCO, while Jeddah has all the scientific and research elements that qualify it to join soon.

Concepts of learning cities

The forum sessions dealt with working papers that discussed the concepts of learning cities, and their role in achieving the targets of the Kingdom’s 2030 vision, by facing the challenges of the times, supporting social justice, equal opportunities, and qualifying individuals for the labor market.

The participants included a review of the efforts of the Ministry of Education in the learning cities project, where the cities of Jubail, Yanbu, Madinah, King Abdullah Economic City and Al -Ahsa joined the global network, in addition to discussing the role of “educated neighborhoods” in consolidating the concepts of continuing education.

The forum also included a symposium entitled “The role of learning cities in comprehensive development”, in addition to a visual presentation entitled “Towards Learning Cities” and “The Horizons of Learning Cities”, to conclude the forum with a number of recommendations supporting Jeddah’s nomination within the global learning cities network.
