This came in a dialogue session held within the activities of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair entitled “The return of the Abu Dhabi Poets Councils under the auspices of the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority” within the framework of the “Nights of Poetry” Council.
Dr. Sultan Al -Amimi, Acting Executive Director of the Poetry and Legacy Sector in the Authority, confirmed at the session, which was moderated by Aref Omar that the return of the programs of poetry councils in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi comes as an embodiment of the guidance of the rational leadership that puts interest in society, its culture and its inheritance at the top of priorities.

He added that poetry councils are an authentic cultural phenomenon in the UAE, pointing to their association with the beginnings of formal education. For example, in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, there are manuscripts written more than 120 years ago by teachers from some Gulf countries and indicates that these teachers were attending the councils of rulers and notables in which poetry was thrown.
Al -Amimi talked about the history of the councils in Dubai, Ajman, Umm Al -Quwain and Sharjah, explaining that the sons of poets and the children of “Al -Freij” were attending them, and many of them became great poets later.
He touched on the presence of literary councils managed by women, which indicates that women were an active partner in the cultural movement, as these councils were not limited to poetry, but also social centers in which issues were discussed and problems are solved.
He pointed out that the emergence of the media contributed to the transfer of councils to a broader segment of people, as poetry programs began to be broadcast on radio and television under the direction of leadership.
He stressed that “the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God bless him, was the first ruler in the region to direct the establishment of programs for popular poetry and ordered the establishment of poetry councils and the payment of monthly salaries and rewards for them, and the first of them is special care.”
For his part, the researcher and academic Dr. Ghassan Al -Hassan explained in his intervention, that Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God have mercy on him, realized from the beginning the importance of poetry in keeping pace with modernization and development in the young state, and for this reason he gave great attention to poets, and was keen to attend their council, listen to their poems, and direct them to highlight the national concepts that unite the Emirati society ..
