150 million passengers annually with the end of the first stage of Al Maktoum Airport

Dubai, May 8/ WAM/ His Excellency Eng. Khalifa Al -Zafin, CEO of Dubai Aviation City Foundation, confirmed that the project of developing Al Maktoum International Airport is witnessing tangible progress since the adoption of the main plan by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai “may God bless him”, in April 2024, and with direct follow -up and directive from His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Supreme President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and CEO For the Emirates and the group.
This came during a press conference held today within the activities of the last day of the airport exhibition 2025 at the Dubai World Trade Center, where Al -Zafin explained that the contracts for the enabling work and the construction of the second runway were actually granted, while other strategic projects entered the first stage such as the automated passengers for passengers and the luggage handling system – the tender stage, with the awarding of the contracts expected later during the current year.
He added that the next stage will witness the launch of tenders for vital projects that include the foundations and concrete for infrastructure work, central cooling stations, and sub -energy stations with a capacity of 132 km, stressing that the project is proceeding according to the scheduled schedule planned under the supervision of the Dubai Foundation for Engineering Aviation Projects.
He pointed out that Al Maktoum International Airport is considered one of the most important strategic projects within the Dubai Economic Agency D33, and will contribute to enhancing the emirate’s position as a global center for aviation, logistics and a sustainable economy, pointing out that Emirates Airlines announcement of achieving record revenues for 2024 reflects the continuous growth in the sector and the importance of future infrastructure.
Al -Zafin stressed the importance of the airport exhibition as a platform to interact with the sector’s partners from the implementation of solutions and providers of solutions and technologies, stressing the commitment of the Dubai Aviation City to hand over the project on its date, to be a future portal that reflects Dubai World leadership in the field of aviation.
During a session of questions and answers, Al -Zafin reviewed the details of the first phase of the project, which includes the construction of a passenger building and four buildings for gates, to increase the capacity to 150 million passengers annually, to reach in the final stage to 260 million passengers and 12 million tons of shipping.
He stressed that the airport site near the port of Jebel Ali and the free zone contributes to establishing a multimedia integrated logistical platform, which supports the city of Dubai South, and provides housing opportunities and work for about one million people.
He explained that the project will contribute to stimulating the local economy by creating thousands of jobs, and strengthening the real estate, tourism, and hospitality sectors, as well as supporting the air freight sector and global supply chains.
Al -Zafin indicated that the airport, which extends over an area of 70 square kilometers, will include more than 400 aircraft gates, a automated transportation system, and advanced technologies that include artificial intelligence, robots and biometric recognition, with a comprehensive commitment to sustainability with the aim of obtaining a gold certificate.
On the mechanism of moving from Dubai International Airport, he explained that the process will take place in an integrated manner and simultaneously to avoid operational challenges, stressing that the executive program for the transition is currently taking place in coordination with all the concerned partners.
Al -Zafin also pointed out that there are urgent and medium -term solutions being implemented to address traffic congestion on the roads leading to Dubai International Airport in cooperation with the Roads and Transport Authority, stressing that these efforts have resulted in a noticeable improvement in the flow of the movement, provided that the procedures continue to secure easy access until the full transfer to Al Maktoum International Airport.
