The decrease in the spending of the Japanese family in the fiscal year 2024 amid high prices

Tokyo on May 11/ WAM/ The spending of the Japanese family in the fiscal year 2024 decreased by 0.1% from the past year, down for the second year in a row, as consumers reduced food spending due to high prices, as reported by government data.
The family, consisting of two or more people on average, spent 304,178 yen (2100 dollars) per month in the fiscal year ending in March, according to the data.
This decrease came as real wages decreased in March by 2.1% from the previous year, affected by high prices.
Food spending, which represents about 30% of family spending, decreased by 1%, after the prices of a wide range of commodities increased. The expenses on transport and communications decreased by 2.6%, as consumers’ spending on the purchase of cars declined.
