Egypt – UN concern about the draft criminal procedure law

The UNHCR spokesman said the commission AShe raised her deep concern about the provisions of the law that gives public prosecutors with large -scale discretionary powers, related to reserve imprisonment, interception of communications and a travel ban.

According to a press release issued by the United Nations Office for Human Rights, the law also provides for “other measures that negatively affect the right to effective legal representation, and the public officials accountable for their behavior, including employees assigned to implement the law.”

Reports also reported that amendments were made in the last moments of the bill before sending it to the president for approval. However, these changes were not announced in front of public opinion, which raises concerns about the lack of legislative transparency, according to the commission.

The United Nations Commission for Human Rights called on the Egyptian president to carefully consider the proposed criminal procedures bill in light of these concerns, before granting him any approval, with the aim of ensuring his full compliance with Egypt’s international obligations in the field of human rights.
