Including Bahrain, the General Assembly elects five new members of the Security Council

The new member states are Bahrain, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberal, Latvia and Colombia.

The non -permanent seats are allocated to the Security Council for the regional regions of the world, where three candidates from the African Group, the Asian countries and the Pacific Countries, are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia and Bahrain.

While voting was made to choose a non -permanent member from the Group of Latin American countries, the Caribbean region, and the Group of Eastern European countries, namely Colombia and Latvia.

Bahrain obtained 186 out of 187 votes who participated in the vote, while the Democratic Republic of the Congo received 183 votes, and Liberia 181 votes.

In the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean, Colombia obtained 180 votes out of 180 who participated in the vote.

In the Group of Eastern European countries, 178 members of the General Assembly voted in favor of the selection of Latvia out of 178 who participated in the vote on this seat.

The first time

This is the first time that Latvia is a member of the Security Council.

With the exception of Latvia, all other candidates have previously occupied the membership of the Council as follows: Colombia seven times, the Democratic Republic of the Congo twice, Bahrain and Liberia once.

More than 50 United Nations member states have previously occupied Security Council membership.

The UN Security Council consists of 15 members, including ten non -permanent members, who are elected by the General Assembly, which represents all 193 member states at the United Nations.

It is scheduled to end the membership period of five other non -permanent members in the Security Council at the end of 2025, namely Algeria, Genoa, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone and Slovenia.

The other five members whose membership ends at the end of 2026 are Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia.

It is noteworthy that the five members of the council are the United Kingdom, China, the United States of America, France and Russia.
