The United Nations condemns an attack on a aid convoy in Darfur, killing 5 humanitarian workers

In a statement issued today, Tuesday, the two international agencies said that the convoy was made up of 15 trucks, and she was trying to reach “Children and families in Fasher, who is affected by starvation, with a nutritional supply and nutritional rescue.” They stressed that the path of the convoy was known and previously agreed with the parties, as is usual in all human convoys.
The statement added: “Under international humanitarian law, aid convoys must be protected, and the parties must adhere to allowing the passage and facilitating humanitarian relief quickly and without obstacle to the needy civilians.”
After months of the escalation of violence, the two agents said that hundreds of thousands of people, including children, in El Fasher – the capital of North Darfur – and its surroundings are at a very risk of malnutrition and hunger, and their situation will be exacerbated if the supplies did not reach them quickly.
The two agencies demanded that the attacks be stopped on the humanitarian workers, their facilities and their vehicles, which is a violation of international humanitarian law. They added: “We call for an urgent investigation and the perpetrators accountable.”
In their statement, the two agencies expressed their regret for the lack of supplies to the weaker children and families. They explained that the convoy has traveled a distance of more than 1,800 km from Port Sudan, “We were scheduled to negotiate to reach the flight to El -Fasher when it was attacked.”
They offered their condolences to the families of the victims, and expressed their sympathy and sincere support to all the injured.
This last incident comes in the wake of a series of attacks on humanitarian operations over the past two years, including the bombing of the World Food Program facilities in Al -Fasher last week, which damaged a workshop, an offices building and a clinic.
The World Food and UNICEF employees are still on the ground despite the insecurity, and the two agencies called for providing safe and safe working conditions, and respecting international humanitarian law by all parties.
They confirmed that “The lives of millions in Sudan, Including sites like El Fasher in Darfur, depend on it. ” They added that the attacks on humanitarian workers, aid, relief operations, as well as civilians and civil infrastructure in Sudan “It has been very long ago without punishment.”
An invitation to conduct an investigation and hold the perpetrators accountable
For his part, UN spokesman Stephen Dujarric “In the most possible statements, this horrific act of violence against humanitarian workers who literally endanger their lives in an attempt to reach children and families at risk in areas affected by starvation in Sudan.”
He pointed out that this was “The first United Nations humanitarian convoy will reach El -Fasher for more than a year.” Mr. Dujarik stressed during the daily press conference in New York the need to stop all attacks on the humanitarian workers, their facilities and vehicles, adding that “These are violations under international humanitarian law, and we call for an urgent investigation and accountability of the perpetrators.”
He called for providing safe and safe working conditions and in the best possible conditions for humanitarian workers “not only in Sudan, but in all countries affected by conflicts.”
