Scorpions season begins on February 6 and continues until March 18

Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomy Society, and member of the Arab Union for Space and Astronomy, Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, stated that the last season of winter for the people of the Gulf and the entire Arabian Peninsula, which is the “scorpion” season, begins astronomically on February 6, and continues until March 18.
He told “Emirates Today” that this season is characterized by moderate weather, abundant rain that is characterized by thunderstorms, and active and volatile winds. It is considered one of the transitional seasons in which the weather changes from cold to moderate and then towards warmth and the beginning of heat.
He stated that the “Arbaeen Scorpio” season for the people of reckoning in Durur begins on February 6 and ends on March 18, while the “Scorpion Season” for the people of Anwa begins with the rise of the star “Saad al-Dahbih” above the eastern horizon at dawn, starting on February 10.
He explained that the scorpion season was called this because the stars of the Scorpius constellation are above the southeastern horizon at dawn, and it was said that their stings alternate between cold and warm, and it was said because the young scorpions (the well-known poisonous insect) begin to appear at this time, and after the scorpion season comes the (Al-Hamimeen) season, which is the first season of spring, where “hamu” meaning warmth and high temperature prevails, starting from March 21, which is the first season of spring.
He pointed out that the period of the (Arbaeen Al-Aqrabi) season is approximately 40 days, and is characterized, according to the usual natural rates, by its moderate weather, and by the abundance and comprehensiveness of the rains. They say: “Al-Aqrabi waters land and sea,” as its rain is more general and includes large areas. Its rains are also characterized by being thunderous, and are characterized by the activity of their winds and their volatility.”
As for the season of scorpions, it is one of the seasons that the Arabs take pride in and say: “Do not let the scorpions enter…you will see that goodness is coming” when the rain falls, spring begins, the weather becomes mild with the abundance of pasture, the spring of the land flourishes, flowers bloom, bees become active, the cattle grow fat and the milk in their udders increases. That is why the people of the cattle resort to making “iqt”, which is dried milk, and the greenness of the land increases in the most beautiful natural forms.
He stated that (the season of scorpions) includes 3 rising stars from the moon’s phases, which are the three “Saudi stars,” each of which has 13 days, with a total of 39 days extending from February 10 to March 20, as follows:
The first star, “Saad the Slayer,” begins on February 10 and is an extension of the features of winter. The winter weather is dominated by expected cold and rain, and the blowing of “cold winds of mourning.” The northern regions of the Arabian Peninsula are exposed to frost, and the people of the northern regions of the Arabian Peninsula generally know what is called “February frost” or “February frost” during the first and second week of February.
Then the second star, “Saad Bala,” starting on February 23, in which the moderation is evident during the day, while the night continues to be cold, and the chance of rain continues, and in its midst are the “days of decisiveness,” the difference between the dissipation of the cold and the arrival of warmth, and in it is the “cold of the old woman,” which occurs in the depths of winter and its end.
Finally, the last star, “Saad Al-Saud,” starting on March 8, is when warm weather prevails, and the warmth begins during the day and the night’s moderation is the dominant feature, and in it the length of the night is equal to the day (from sunrise to sunset), and then the length of the day is taken increments. It ends on March 20, and the spring weather disturbances “Sarayat” begin to become active.
