Sharjah reviews its cultural project at the Rio International Book Fair 2025

Sharjah, June 20/ WAM/ under the direction of Sheikha Badour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sharjah Book Authority, the Emirate of Sharjah reviewed its cultural and civilizational project in front of the audience of the Rio International Book Fair 2025.

It also highlighted the Emirati and contemporary Arab literary movement by translating an anthology of Emirati literature of the Portuguese language embodied the development of the cultural scene in the UAE.

Sharjah’s participation in this event, the largest in the level of the book industry in Latin America, comes within the framework of Brazil’s celebration of the international capitals of the book, after Rio de Janeiro chose to hold the title for the year 2025, a title that Sharjah won in 2019 in appreciation of its global position in supporting culture and making the book.

The authority reviewed through its co -wing, the Emirati and Arab cultural movement, and its most prominent features at the level of the knowledge, literature and publishing industry, where it participated in a series of dialogue sessions and held meetings with publishers, translators and representatives of cultural institutions with the aim of supporting knowledge exchange and opening new horizons for translating business from and to Arabic.

The authority invited the actors in the publishing sector to participate in the international programs organized by Sharjah throughout the year, such as the Sharjah International Book Fair, the Publishers Conference, the Sharjah Reading Festival for Children, the Library Conference and other international events.

His Excellency Ahmed bin Rakad Al -Amiri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, stressed that the authority’s participation in the Rio International Book Fair embodies the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, which puts culture in the crucifixion of development strategy and sees in the book a tool to build bridges of dialogue with the world.

Al -Amiri said: “The presence of Sharjah in Rio is an affirmation of the centrality of Arab and Emirati culture on the map of the knowledge industry in the world. Today we are not only transferring the Emirati identity, but we open a living dialogue between Latin America with its full knowledge and cultural history and between Arab culture with its full manifestations at the level of thought, literature, art and creativity, benefiting from the choice of Rio as a global capital of the book for the year 2025 to renew Our partnerships with the cultural community of Latin America. “

He added: “We are going on the directives of Sheikha Badour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi in enabling Emirati and Arab writers and Arab writers to reach new markets and develop sustainable support systems that enhance their presence on the international book industry map.”

Within the cultural program accompanying the Rio International Book Fair, the Sharjah Book Authority organized a dialogue session entitled “The Heritage of Arabic Literature and the New Literary Movement led by Sharjah” during which it highlighted the development of the Emirati literary scene and the role played by Sharjah in supporting writers and cultural projects.

Three of the Emirati writers, whose work was translated by the Sharjah Book Authority into the Portuguese (Brazilian), participated in the session: Abdel Hamid Ahmed, the owner of the book “On the Edge of the Day” and Lulwa Al -Mansouri, author of “We went out of the Jabal Rib” and Nasser Al -Dhahiri, author of the book “Mnakla Salt and Suffeths ashes”.

It also organized a special signing ceremony for translated books in the corridors of the Rio de Janeiro Biennale, as part of the efforts of the Sharjah Book Authority to enhance cultural exchange and support the presence of Emirati literature in the global scene.

The Sharjah Book Authority, during its participation, shed light on the leading projects that it leads in the field of knowledge industry, led by the Sharjah International Book Fair and the Sharjah Reading Festival for Children and the Free Zone of Sharjah Publishing City, along with the Sharjah Fund for Publishing Publishing (Anchor), which represents an innovative model to support the publishing industry in emerging markets and “Sharjah Literary Agency” that works to care for the rights of Arab authors and publishers And expand their presence globally.

The commission also shed light on Sharjah Public Libraries, which has continued its role in spreading knowledge for more than a century, and is one of the oldest cultural institutions in the region, and publishers have been briefed on international specialized professional conferences hosted by the Emirate of Sharjah annually, including the “Publishers Conference”, “Libraries Conference”, “Conference of Distributors” and the Sharjah Celebration Conference “and others.

The Sharjah Book Authority’s pavilion in the exhibition witnessed the participation of the “Pleish Heir” initiative, the leading global platform launched by Sheikha Badour Al Qasimi with the aim of promoting women in the world of publishing and providing opportunities for flyers for communication and sharing experiences, as well as presenting a group of publications of “Al Qasimi Publications” in addition to a group of versions of the Culture Department that reflects the diversity of the cultural scene in the emirate and its richness.

It is noteworthy that the Rio International Book Fair, which started its first session in 1983, developed to become the largest literary festival in Brazil and is organized annually by the National Chamber of Publishers in cooperation with the most prominent publishing houses and annually attracts hundreds of writers and more than 600 thousand visitors, which makes it a pivotal platform for convergence of cultures and exchanging knowledge.
