Abu Dhabi expands the scope of operation of self -driving taxis to include the islands of Al -Reem and Mary

Abu Dhabi, July 29 / WAM / The Integrated Transport Center, affiliated with the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi, expanded the scope of operating self -driving taxi services to include the Al -Reem and Al -Mary islands, in cooperation with the company “Weid Ride”, which specializes in self -driving techniques, and through the “Uber” platform and “Communications Communications” as a local operator for this project, within the framework of the strategy of the Smart Systems Council.

This initiative falls within the framework of supporting the efforts of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to develop a transport system supported by artificial intelligence, and to enhance its position as a regionally leading destination in the areas of smart movement and innovation, within the Abu Dhabi Smart Transport strategy aimed at establishing a sustainable and smart transportation for the emirate’s residents and visitors.

With this expansion, self -driving taxi services include half of the main areas of Abu Dhabi, which supports Abu Dhabi’s strategic vision to make 25% of the trips in the emirate depend on smart transport by 2040.

The service aims to operate the self -driving vehicles on the Reem and Al -Maryah islands, which are one of the most densely densely populated areas of Abu Dhabi, and is a number of vital centers in the financial, residential and commercial sectors, as the two islands, thanks to the complicated traffic patterns and the high density of vehicles, provides an ideal environment to review the efficiency of the advanced “Weid Ride” technologies, while this step contributes to meeting the increasing demand On reliable and easily available solutions, in light of the increasing traffic challenges.

This comes as a continuation of self -driving taxi services currently available on the islands of Saadiyat and Yas and on the roads leading to Zayed International Airport, which is part of the current expansion plan for the fleet and the scope of work for the smart mobility project in the emirate.

Since this service was launched on the “Uber” platform in December 2024, the volume of the fleet of self -driving taxi has doubled three times, and the integrated transportation center is currently working to expand the range of service to include additional areas on Abu Dhabi Island, which provides wider coverage and enhances the effectiveness of the smart movement in the emirate, to create the operational environment needed for the commercial operation of the project, in order to achieve the strategic goals of the smart transformation in the sector Transport.

By integrating artificial intelligence techniques and sustainable movement solutions in vital sectors, Abu Dhabi has established a pioneering model for the Middle East cities that seek to achieve smart urban development.

Dr. Abdullah Al -Ghafli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Center, said that this expansion represents an important station in the Abu Dhabi march towards achieving its vision of a more intelligent and secure transport system, stressing the commitment to adopting innovative and sustainable solutions to enhance the transportation network, improve the quality of the population, accelerate the pace of this progress and improve the transportation experience for all in cooperation with strategic partners.

Jennifer Lee, Financial Director and Head of the International Department of Weiid, said: The Reem and Mary is one of the vital areas with high demand, and they form two strategic gates to Abu Dhabi, and this expansion allows access to a larger segment of passengers, reviewing advanced technologies in complex urban environments, and enhancing the presence of self -driving vehicles on a wider scale throughout the emirate.

Mohamed Jardana, head of the self -mobility department in the Uber Middle East, expressed his aspiration to make self -driving vehicles available for more people in the emirate, expecting that the year 2025 will be the year in which self -driving vehicle technology becomes a daily reality for all.

It is worth noting that Abu Dhabi has established its pioneering site in the field of smart transport as the first city in the Middle East and North Africa region to operate the commercial self -driving vehicles, and currently has the largest operating fleet of 44 vehicles operating in a number of vital sites within the city.

This expansion reflects the success of the strategic partnerships that Abu Dhabi leads with a group of leading companies globally in the fields of technology and transportation, such as “Weid Ride”, “Space 42”, “Uber” and “Communication of Transport”, which contributes to developing an advanced infrastructure for the smart mobility system.

“Weid Ride” is also one of the most prominent technology companies specialized in self -driving techniques, and in Abu Dhabi has its largest operating fleet outside the United States and China, which confirms the emirate’s position as a leading center for innovation in the field of transport and reflects its vision in developing a smart transport system that supports sustainable urban development goals.
