A rare recognition .. an Israeli court acknowledges the exposure of Palestinian prisoners to starve

Yesterday, the Supreme Court in Israel ruled that the Israeli government deprived the Palestinian prisoners of the minimum food, and ordered the authorities to increase the food provided to them and improve its quality, while the National Security Minister Etamar bin Jafir criticized the ruling, pledging that his policy towards prisons would not change.

The Israeli Supreme Court ruling is a “very rare exercise”, as the court’s role is limited to advising the government on the legality of its policies, and it is rarely opposed to government measures during the 23 -month -old war on the Gaza Strip, according to the Associated Press.

A 3 -party commission of 3 judges ruled that the Israeli government is legally obligated to provide 3 meals per day for Palestinian prisoners to ensure the “minimum survival”, and the authorities ordered the compliance of this commitment.

In an unexpected decision, the court accepted the petition submitted by the Association of Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), last year, with the Israeli rights group Gisha, supporting their conclusion that the deliberate restriction of prisoners ’food in Israeli prisons caused the Palestinians to suffer from malnutrition and hunger during the Israeli war on Gaza.

The court said: “We are not talking here about a comfortable or luxury life, but rather about the basic conditions for survival as required by law.”

The Palestinian authorities recorded the death of at least 61 Palestinians in Israeli detention since the beginning of the war, and last March, a 17 -year -old Palestinian boy died in an Israeli prisons as a result of what doctors said was likely to hunger.
