Luxembourg decides to recognize the State of Palestine

Luke Frieden, Prime Minister of Luxembourg, and Kazavier Betile, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced before a parliamentary committee that the Luxembourg government intends to recognize the State of Palestine, in a move expected to be officially decided during the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly in New York at the end of this month in coordination with other European countries, including France and Belgium.
This declaration comes after months of hesitation by the Luxembourg government, and in light of the escalation of European calls to end the Israeli war on Gaza that has continued since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which, according to local health officials, has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, while the Tersa Ribera, the deputy head of the European Commission, described what is going on in Gaza as genocide.
Ursula von der Line, President of the European Commission, also announced last week that the European Union will take a more striking position towards Israel by freezing payments and imposing sanctions on extremist ministers and violent settlers, and the new position coincides with the United Nations General Assembly last Friday to support a declaration that includes tangible steps, time -fragmented and irreversible in it towards a two -state solution before its meeting on September 22.
