The maritime event highlights the importance of protecting biological diversity and developing capacity

Dubai on October 1 / WAM / The second day of the activities of the maritime event accompanying the International Maritime Day, which the UAE hosted over a period of two days, witnessed between September 30 and October, a series of specialized dialogue sessions that dealt with central issues in the future of global marine governance.

Discussions focused on protecting biological diversity in the high seas, and the importance of developing human capabilities for more sustainable oceans, with the wide participation of international experts, policy makers and representatives of the shipping sectors and civil society. The second day started with the session “The Role of Shipping in the Agreement of Maritime Biodiversity in the High Seas” and witnessed an in -depth discussion on the Agreement of Maritime Biodiversity in the areas outside the national mandate, as a historical station in the path of protection of the ocean.

The speakers reviewed the direct repercussions of the agreement on international shipping operations, including environmental impact assessments, marine navigation paths, and the establishment of protected areas on the high seas, stressing that the agreement constitutes a pivotal framework that guarantees the sustainable use of marine resources and enhances the protection of environmental systems facing increasing and unprecedented challenges.

The activities of the second day of the event concluded with a discussion session titled “Development of Capacity for Sustainable Oceans”, which highlighted the pivotal role of human capabilities in advancing the sustainable maritime development.

Participants stressed the importance of strengthening maritime education in developing countries, including less developed countries and small, developing island countries to qualify cadres with technical skills and the necessary institutional frameworks, stressing the need to integrate sustainability, climate work and pollution prevention within training programs, as it is a pillar of preparing a new generation of marine leaders capable of innovation and formulating future solutions.
