Abu Dhabi, 12 October / WAM / The Cyber Security Council of the UAE Government confirmed that negligence in securing portable smart devices and following unsafe digital practices may make them vulnerable to being targeted by electronic hackers, especially since they have become essential tools used in banking transactions, government services, and daily communications.
The Council said in a statement to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that the data showed that 60% of smartphone users neglect to update operating systems on a regular basis, which leaves security gaps for hackers to exploit, pointing out that recent years have witnessed a 50% increase in malicious attacks and malicious software targeting these devices, which reflects the scale of electronic threats that are constantly evolving.
He pointed out several common factors that put smartphones and tablets that contain important and sensitive data in danger, the most prominent of which is the use of weak personal identification numbers that can be easily predicted, the failure to activate biometric verification systems such as the face or fingerprint, in addition to the tendency to download free applications from unreliable sources that often carry malicious software or spy tools.
The Cybersecurity Council stressed that securing smartphones is no longer an option, but has become an urgent necessity to protect personal data, financial information, and private correspondence, pointing out that targeting these devices is no longer limited to individuals only, but also includes institutions and companies that rely on mobile phones to carry out their work.
The Council recommended a number of preventive measures that any user can easily follow to reduce the possibility of hacking, including updating operating systems and applications periodically to ensure that security gaps are filled, creating strong personal identification numbers that are difficult to guess, and activating biometric protection systems such as fingerprint or face recognition to provide an additional layer of security, in addition to making sure to download applications from official stores and trusted sources. The Council warned that unsecured mobile devices may lead to incidents of data leakage and unauthorized access, which may lead to financial theft or loss of identity, calling on users to adopt a culture of cyber awareness because prevention begins with knowing the risks and following safe digital behaviors.
