المملكة: New planning and better services.. “municipalities” redraw their supervisory scopes


Launched Modernization and harmonization work , within a workshop held in the city of Riyadh, represents the launch of one of the development paths of aims to raise the efficiency of municipal work and enhance development coordination.

Challenges of supervisory scopes

The experience of the Al-Baha Region Municipality was also reviewed, which completed the process of modernizing and harmonizing the supervisory scopes, as the secretariat presented its experience in enhancing harmonization and improving performance, which allowed the participants See a successful model that can be expanded and applied in other regions.

Municipal System

The Undersecretary for Urban Planning and Lands, Khalid bin Muhammad Al-Ghamlas, confirmed that the Ministry, through this initiative, is working to enhance the efficiency and structure of the municipal system and address current challenges.

In a way that contributes to achieving more efficient urban planning and effective management of services. And infrastructure, and expanding access to municipal services.

Municipal supervisory scopes

The representative in the Kingdom of the Habitat Program, Tina Christiansen, explained that clear and precise municipal supervisory scopes, harmony of powers, and fair coverage of services are essential elements for effective, people-oriented urban management.

It contributes to ensuring equitable access to services, efficient land use, and directing targeted investment in housing, infrastructure, and the public realm.

In turn, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Margaret Jones Williams stressed that strengthening the structure and classification of the municipal system will enable improving local planning and urban management, and enhancing Institutional capacities and governance frameworks, to ensure the sustainability of this transformation.

Strengthening the governance of spatial planning

This initiative is part of a three-year joint cooperation program between the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, the United Nations Development Programme, and the United Nations Habitat programme.

It includes six initiatives aimed at strengthening the governance of spatial planning, empowering municipalities, building capacities, and supporting Innovation in urban development.

This partnership embodies the Kingdom’s commitment to continuing to achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and enhancing cooperation with international expertise, thus contributing to achieving sustainable, comprehensive and effective urban development.
