المملكة: A rare medical achievement in Mecca: implanting a deep brain stimulation device for an epilepsy patient

The Medical City explained that the patient, a 30-year-old citizen, was suffering from recurring daily epileptic seizures despite the use of the latest available drug treatments, noting that the medical team targeted during the operation the central nucleus of the thalamus, which is one of the deep nerve centers. Responsible for regulating electrical activity in the brain.
Microelectrodes were implanted inside the nucleus with the aim of modifying the neural network that causes multifocal epileptic seizures, while using “BrainSense” technology to read brain electrical charges and program stimulation with high accuracy.
Localization of neural technologies
The Medical City indicated that This technology represents one of the latest methods of treating epilepsy in the world, as it contributes to reducing the number of seizures and improving the quality of life of patients, adding to the city’s achievements in the field of precise neurosurgery and advanced neurological techniques.
The surgical team was led by Dr. Khaled Muhammad Al-Orabi – Consultant Neurosurgeon at King Abdullah Medical City – with the participation of an integrated team from the specialties of neurological planning, anesthesia and nursing, where the implementation The operation was a complete success without any complications, and the patient was able to leave the hospital a few days after the procedure, following a noticeable improvement in his neurological condition.
The Medical City confirmed that this success is a pioneering step in localizing precise neurological techniques within the hospitals of the Ministry of Health, and represents a qualitative shift in the treatment of epilepsy patients who do not respond to medications, noting that what has been achieved reflects what The Kingdom is witnessing rapid development in advanced neurological care services, within the framework of achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Health Transformation Program aimed at enhancing the quality of life and empowering national medical competencies.
