With just her fingertips, a craftswoman creates a new artistic language to draw heritage with microscopic threads

In a unique style that is considered the first of its kind, Akhdar developed a precise technique that enables her to “paint with threads”, where she knots thousands of double, compressed knots of cotton threads to form very precise pictures and drawings.

Simple craft and dazzling works of art

The artist Akhdar explained that this innovation comes as part of her contribution to the “Year of Handicrafts 2025,” as she sought to develop the art that dates back to the thirteenth century, when sailors used it to make nets. Fishing.

She stressed that the beauty of this craft lies in the simplicity of its components, as it only requires threads and fingers to produce various pieces of art, starting from wall hangings and hanging chairs, all the way to Small pieces are widely popular, such as medals, rosaries, and car diffusers.

Completing these works of art requires a great deal of effort and time. A large piece may take more than 60 continuous hours of work, while smaller pieces need between 25 and 30 hours. The duration of work increases with the increase in the number of colors used in the painting, as the intersections and overlapping of threads require double focus and effort compared to works that rely on only two colors.

Doha Akhdar’s creativity included community interaction and participation in awareness initiatives. During the activities dedicated to Pink October for Breast Cancer Awareness, which were organized by the “Amal” Cancer Control Association in Qatif Governorate, it presented a live demonstration of making a piece of art bearing the campaign’s logo, and provided the opportunity for more than 50 visitors to learn about the basics of this art and experience its application for themselves, which received great interaction and demand from the audience, who expressed great admiration for this combination of authentic art and community messages.
