Real Madrid demands compensation from the European Union for the Super League

Real Madrid is seeking compensation from the European Football Association (UEFA) after the club said that the regional court in Madrid rejected appeals submitted by the Spanish Football Federation and the Spanish League in the European Super League case.

Real Madrid was one of 12 European clubs that supported the launch of the European Super League in 2021, but the idea collapsed after strong public and government pressure.

UEFA also opposed the launch of the tournament, but the European Court of Justice said in December 2023 that UEFA and FIFA had violated European Union laws in doing so.

Last year, a Spanish judge ordered FIFA and UEFA to cease their opposition to the tournament, ruling that they were engaging in anti-competitive behavior and exploiting their dominant position.

Real Madrid said in a statement: “Real Madrid welcomes the decision of the Regional Court in Madrid to reject the appeals submitted by UEFA, the Spanish Federation and the Spanish League, stressing that UEFA committed, in the Super League case, a major violation of the European Union’s competition rules, abusing its dominant position, which is in line with the ruling of the European Court of Justice.”

He added: “The club also explains that, during 2025, it held extensive discussions with senior UEFA officials to find ways to achieve the necessary reforms, but no agreement was reached on more transparent governance, financial sustainability, protecting player health and improving the fan experience, including free and globally available viewing options such as those used in the Club World Cup.

He continued: “Accordingly, the club announces that it will continue to work for the benefit of world football and its fans, while demanding compensation from UEFA for the serious damages it has suffered.”
