The United Nations expresses concern about the situation in Tanzania and calls for impartial investigations

Secretary-General António Guterres denounced the loss of life and offered his condolences to the families of the victims. The Secretary-General stressed – in a statement attributed to his spokesman – the paramount importance of preserving basic freedoms, specifically the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, including access to information.
The Secretary-General called for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into all allegations of excessive use of force.
Guterres also expressed concern about reports of enforced disappearances and detention in the run-up to the elections. He urged the authorities to ensure due process for all detainees, ensure their safety and security, and conduct comprehensive and impartial investigations into all allegations of human rights violations in line with international standards.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations called on all parties concerned to exercise restraint, reject violence, and engage in an inclusive and constructive dialogue to address grievances and prevent further escalation.
The press statement stressed that the United Nations stands ready to support efforts aimed at promoting dialogue, democratic governance and sustainable peace in Tanzania.
