Britain lifts sanctions on Sharia and the European Union pledges the same
Britain lifted sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on Friday after the United Nations Security Council took a similar decision ahead of al-Sharaa’s meeting with US President Donald Trump next week, while the European Union confirmed that it would take the same decision.
Britain announced in a notice on the government’s website that sanctions were also lifted on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
The two were previously subject to financial sanctions targeting ISIS and Al-Qaeda.
A European Union spokesman said on Friday that the United Nations decision will be reflected in the measures that the bloc will take.
Britain lifted some sanctions on Syria in April, while the European Union lifted its economic sanctions in May, but restrictions related to weapons and security remain in effect.
A European Commission spokesman said: “We remain committed to supporting a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led transition to help build a better future for all Syrians.”
