The United Nations expresses its regret at Washington’s withdrawal from reviewing its human rights record

The United Nations Human Rights Council expressed its regret at the withdrawal of the United States of America from participating in the review of its human rights record, which was scheduled this week in Geneva. The review, known as the “Universal Periodic Review,” is a process in which all member states of the United Nations participate and within which each country’s record is periodically reviewed by its counterparts.
According to the United Nations Information Center, the United States was scheduled to participate in a meeting with the working group of the Human Rights Council today, Friday, but it refused. This is the first time that it has refused to participate in its own review.
Urging members of the Human Rights Council " Washington called for resuming cooperation with the Universal Periodic Review process, and said that they would change its date to 2026 and that it may take place earlier if the United States re-engages.
This comes in the wake of the US administration’s recent withdrawal from the Human Rights Council. The previous American withdrawal from the Council in 2018, during the first term of Donald Trump’s presidency, did not prevent the United States from participating in the comprehensive review conducted in 2020.
The Human Rights Council consists of 47 members, and the rest of the 193 United Nations members are observers in the Council with the ability to represent themselves during the procedures.
The Council said that it will continue efforts to persuade the United States to rejoin the process, stressing that the “periodic review” system Overall" It is based on the equal participation of all members of the United Nations.
