"Union Society" Participates in the 61st session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva

Geneva, 1st April / WAM / The Union Society for Human Rights participated in the work of the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, which concluded yesterday, and was held in cooperation with organizations that hold consultative status with the United Nations, by submitting 8 written statements and 9 oral statements that addressed human rights issues of international and regional dimensions.
The association’s interventions focused on a number of pivotal issues within the council’s agenda, the forefront of which was condemning the Iranian armed attacks against the UAE, and considering them a clear violation of the United Nations Charter, while emphasizing the civilian casualties of multiple nationalities and calling for international accountability.
It also called for the suspension of Iran’s membership in the Human Rights Council based on the results of the fact-finding mission that proved the existence of a systematic institutional pattern of violations, and the resulting regional extension that included targeting the UAE.
It warned of the danger of inflammatory and misleading media discourse directed against the UAE and its role in fueling violence and undermining stability, while calling for the development of international standards of accountability.
It also stressed respect for the sovereignty of states and not to use human rights as a tool for political interference, in the context of the systematic digital disinformation campaigns that the UAE is exposed to.
It touched on the push towards developing a binding international framework for digital rights, including supporting the proposal to launch a unified Arab declaration and moving towards an international agreement to protect rights in the digital space.
It also highlighted the misuse of human rights discourse in the digital space and the targeting of human rights defenders, in light of systematic targeting patterns.
During its participation, the association highlighted the experiences of the UAE as practical models in promoting human rights, emphasizing the country’s position as a leading and attractive destination for labor, with a work environment that guarantees social protection and equal opportunities.
It also reviewed the UAE’s role in enhancing the protection of children digitally by issuing Federal Decree Law No. 26 of 2025, which establishes an integrated legal framework to ensure their safety in the digital environment.
She touched on the role of the UAE as an advanced model linking the fight against financial crimes and the protection of human rights through an integrated legislative and institutional framework and a national strategy based on prevention and capacity building.
She pointed to the country’s success in consolidating its position as a global model in climate action and sustainable development, by hosting COP28, launching major financing initiatives, contributing to financing the Loss and Damage Fund, and committing to the energy transition and achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
She pointed out that the UAE has adopted an integrated approach that enhances economic flexibility within a human rights framework, by developing labor and social protection legislation and enhancing labor market governance, and noted that the UAE has adopted a pioneering institutional approach in humanitarian work.
At the conclusion of its participation, the association stressed that these interventions reflect an approach based on strengthening the credibility of the international human rights system and linking rights to security, stability and sustainable development, stressing the importance of joint international action to confront emerging challenges, especially in the areas of media incitement, digital rights, and cross-border violations.
