Zayed bin Mohammed bin Zayed witnesses the final race competitions of the second season of the Abu Dhabi League for Independent and Proceeding Racing

ABU DHABI, 15th November, 2017 (WAM) – His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan witnessed the final race competitions of the second season of the Abu Dhabi League for Independent and Autonomous Racing, which was held today at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, on the sidelines of the activities of the first edition of the “Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week”, organized by the Intelligent Autonomous Systems Council, during the period from 10 to 15 this November.
His Highness followed part of the “Artificial Intelligence vs. Human” race, with the participation of former Formula 1 driver Daniil Kvyat in direct competition with the fully self-driving car of the “Technical University of Munich” team.
This race demonstrated the level of accuracy, speed of response and operational efficiency reached by these advanced technologies, confirming the great development witnessed by the Abu Dhabi Independent and Self-Driving Racing League in its second season.
His Highness also attended the final race between the six qualifying teams: the “Kentz” team and the Technological Innovation Institute team, from the United Arab Emirates; The Technical University of Munich team and the Constructor University team, from Germany; And the “University of Modena and Reggio Emilia” team and the “Politecnico di Milano” team, from Italy, where self-driving cars presented an outstanding performance, reflecting the development in their advanced system, in a race that confirmed the leading global position of the Abu Dhabi League for autonomous and self-driving racing.
After the end of the competitions, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan congratulated the winners of the final race, praising the level presented by the participating teams and their outstanding performance, which reflected their commitment to developing innovative technological solutions supported by the latest applications of artificial intelligence and self-driving systems in the sport of independent motor racing.
His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan pointed out that the Abu Dhabi League for Independent and Autonomous Racing has become an integrated global platform for showcasing the latest findings of artificial intelligence technologies and autonomous systems in motor racing, noting the advanced technologies and advanced solutions that were showcased during the league’s competitions in its second season, in terms of levels of accuracy, speed of response, and high operational efficiency of the participating cars.

The race activities were also attended by Sheikh Mohammed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President of the Emirates Marine Sports Federation, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club, and His Excellency Faisal Abdulaziz Al Bannai, Advisor to the President of the UAE for Strategic and Advanced Technology Research Affairs, Secretary General of the Advanced Technology Research Council; His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Hamad Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the UAE Government Cybersecurity Council; Her Excellency Dr. Sheikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, His Excellency Professor Ibrahim Saeed Al Hajri, President of Khalifa University, and a number of senior officials.
In the second season of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous and Drone Racing League, 11 teams from around the world participated to compete for prizes worth $2.25 million. The league showcased the latest findings in artificial intelligence technologies, robotics and self-driving systems, and witnessed the organization of distinguished displays using drones, and attracted a large audience from various categories to follow the innovative performances and competitions in the world of autonomous and unmanned car racing.
