UN official: The Lebanese army alone cannot implement Resolution 1701

The United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, confirmed that the army alone cannot implement Resolution 1701, explaining that the presence of the Israeli army north of the Blue Line and the repeated Israeli military activity throughout the country still constitutes a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Lebanese Information Agency reported today, Thursday, that the United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon presented her briefing to the Security Council on the implementation of Resolution 1701, along with the Under-Secretary-General for Operations. Peace be upon you Jean-Pierre Lacroix.

Plasschaert praised the progress made by the Lebanese Armed Forces in addressing the issue of weapons outside the authority of the state, especially south of the Litani River, stressing the urgent need to adopt a comprehensive governmental approach with regard to extending state authority.
