The UAE and the European Union enhance cooperation in the field of sustainable aviation fuel

Dubai, 21 November / WAM / The European Union and the UAE held a high-level session on sustainable aviation fuels as part of the Sustainability Program at the Dubai Airshow 2025, in order to highlight the growing momentum for international cooperation in the field of decarbonizing the aviation sector.
In an event, organized by the European Union Delegation to the UAE within the European Union Green Diplomacy Weeks initiative, in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, and the European-Gulf Cooperation Project on the Green Transition funded by the European Union, senior politicians and experts from various relevant sectors met to discuss the importance of expanding sustainable fuel production, developing supportive regulatory frameworks, and strengthening regional partnerships.
Discussions focused on the need to develop supporting strategies to accelerate the adoption of sustainable fuels in the aviation sector, as an important step towards achieving net zero emissions in the sector.
The event highlighted the integration of visions of the EU Aviation Regulation, which mandates a minimum of 2% sustainable fuel by 2025 and up to 70% by 2050, the goals of the UAE Initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, the National Hydrogen Strategy that prioritizes clean fuels within a diversified and sustainable energy system, as well as the International Civil Aviation Organization’s ambitious global vision to reduce CO2 emissions from international aviation by 5% by 2030 through the use of sustainable aviation fuels.
In her opening speech, Her Excellency Lucy Berger, European Union Ambassador to the UAE, said: “The European Union and the UAE share a common ambition to lead global efforts in the field of sustainable aviation. By working together, we can reach innovative solutions that contribute to expanding the production of clean fuels, and building the partnerships necessary to achieve climate neutrality.”
His Excellency Engineer Saif Ghobash, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Petroleum, Gas and Mineral Resources, said: “Sustainable fuel in the aviation sector is a major pillar in achieving our national goals regarding climate neutrality. We aim, in cooperation with the European Union, to accelerate our local production, strengthen supply chains, and develop policies that support a more sustainable future for the aviation sector.”
This dialogue session comes as part of the expanded efforts made by the European Union within the European-Gulf cooperation project on the green transition, which aims to strengthen partnerships in achieving sustainability in the fields of energy, environment and finance in the Gulf region, thereby contributing to supporting the common goals of the two regions in achieving climate neutrality and enhancing the flexibility of the global transition in the field of energy.
