The Supreme Council of Energy reviews the strategy of “zero-emission public transportation in Dubai 2050”

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, chaired the 91st meeting of the Council, which was held virtually, in the presence of the Vice Chairman of the Council, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Secretary-General of the Council, Ahmed Butti Al Muhairbi, and members of the Council. The Council reviewed the strategic goals of the Emirate of Dubai, and discussed a number of strategic initiatives that advance sustainability in the emirate, and future aspirations for achieving carbon neutrality, as it reviewed two main axes: the “Circle Dubai” initiative to improve waste reduction practices. Dubai Municipality, and the latest developments in the “Zero-emission public transportation in the Emirate of Dubai 2050” strategy adopted by the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai.

The Vice Chairman of the Council, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, said: “In line with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, we continue to implement pioneering initiatives and projects that enhance Dubai’s position in the areas of clean energy, sustainability and energy efficiency, in a way that supports the goals of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050, which contributes to reaching 100% of energy production capacity from clean sources by the year 2050”.

He added: “The Circle Dubai initiative is a cornerstone in transforming the emirate’s waste management system towards a circular economy model, as it aims to improve waste collection, sorting and recycling processes using the latest technological solutions. The updates presented in the strategy (Zero-emission public transportation in the Emirate of Dubai 2050) confirm the progress made in transforming Dubai’s mass transport fleet into an emission-free fleet, through expanding the use of electric and hydrogen vehicles, and enhancing their supporting infrastructure, which directly contributes to reducing The carbon footprint of the transportation sector and achieving our ambitious goals for the year 2050.”

For his part, the Secretary-General of the Council, Ahmed Butti Al Muhairbi, said: “The Council, through the approved strategies and established implementation mechanisms, is keen to evaluate performance to ensure the achievement of tangible results that support the future vision of consolidating Dubai’s position in all areas of sustainable development and the green economy.”

The Council confirmed that the activated programs to reduce waste and increase recycling processes, in addition to reducing carbon emissions resulting from the land transport sector, will be among the priorities that will be reviewed in the future.
