"Trends" It presents an integrated vision to enhance energy security and protect sea lanes

Abu Dhabi, April 17 / WAM / Trends Research and Consultations participated in the virtual symposium organized by the Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat), in partnership with the Arab Energy Forum, under the title “Developments in the Strait of Hormuz between Geography and Global Energy Security,” within the framework of examining the accelerating geopolitical repercussions on the stability of the global energy system.
The participants discussed the most prominent geopolitical challenges related to the Strait of Hormuz and their implications for global energy security.
His Excellency Dr. Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transport and Communications, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat), stressed the importance of strengthening regional and international dialogue on issues of energy security and developments in maritime navigation, and the necessity of continuing coordination between research centers and decision makers in a way that serves the stability of global energy markets.
For his part, Dr. Muhammad Al-Ali, CEO of Trends Group, stressed that the recent regional crisis and the accompanying security developments in the Arabian Gulf region represent a strategic opportunity to reformulate the relations of the Gulf states with international partners on a more balanced basis, taking into account the requirements of common energy security, and strengthening the region’s position in the equations of the global economy.
He explained that recent developments revealed that energy security is no longer just a local or regional issue, but has become a cross-border sovereign issue, pointing out that the events also showed the sensitivity of the Strait of Hormuz as a major fulcrum in the global economic system, as any disturbance in it is directly reflected in global markets and supply chains.
He called for adopting new strategic approaches, including what is known as the “defensive connectivity strategy,” which is based on linking the interests of major consuming countries to the stability of sea lanes, thus enhancing the opportunities for international intervention to protect them when they are exposed to any threat. He stressed that the current crisis highlighted the strategic importance of the Gulf countries in ensuring the stability of energy supplies, indicating that any disturbance in the region is immediately reflected in the global economy.
He called for strengthening this role by moving along several main paths, including moving from the concept of traditional supply security to “network energy security,” based on diversifying and integrating transportation paths, and developing an interconnected regional infrastructure that reduces the impact of strategic choke points.
He stressed the importance of accelerating the transition towards alternative energy, through increasing investments in renewable energy, especially green hydrogen and solar energy, and developing regional electrical interconnection networks and alternative energy corridors.
He also stressed that what the region witnessed does not represent a passing crisis, but rather a strategic turning point that requires adopting a collective Gulf vision based on integration, flexibility and innovation, in a way that enhances the ability of the Gulf countries to influence the future of the global energy system.
