Acting Minister of Environment and Governor of Fayoum inaugurate "Fayoum International Film Festival for Environmental Films"

Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development, Acting Minister of the Environment, and Dr. Ahmed Al-Ansari, Governor of Fayoum, opened the activities of the second session of the Fayoum International Film Festival for Environmental Films and Contemporary Arts, which is held under the auspices of the Ministries of Culture and Environment from November 25 to 30, in the presence of Dr. Mohamed Al-Tuni, Deputy Governor of Fayoum, Bilal Habash, Deputy Governor of Beni Suef, Hani Lashin, President of the Festival, Sayed Abdel Khaleq, Director of the Festival, and artist Ahmed Magdy, Member of the Council. The trustees, the festival advisor, Dr. Samir Shaheen, vice president of the festival, and a number of artists and filmmakers from Egypt and the Arab world.
Dr. Manal Awad stressed, during her opening speech, that holding the festival in Fayoum carries an important message, where the aesthetics of the natural place meet the value of the environmental message, and art meets awareness in one of the most beautiful parts of Egypt, noting that cinema has today become one of the most powerful tools for spreading environmental awareness and moving societies toward better behaviors.
She explained that the world is facing accelerating environmental challenges, including climate change, the deterioration of biological diversity, and the pollution of natural resources, which imposes the necessity of finding new and effective means to raise environmental awareness and promote positive change, noting that art is able to reach people’s consciences and shape their vision towards environmental issues.
She indicated that the Ministry of Environment believes that protecting the environment is a collective responsibility that requires a true partnership between the government and civil society. And the private sector and creative people, stressing that sustainable development is the only way to achieve a balance between the needs of the present and the rights of future generations.
The Minister of Local Development, Acting Minister of the Environment, praised the selection of Fayoum Governorate to host the festival, given its unique environmental and cultural diversity that makes it a prominent model of integration between development and preservation of natural heritage, noting that the governorate represents one of the most important areas supporting eco-tourism and the economy.
She also praised the participation of more than 60 films from 22 countries in this session, and the honoring of prominent figures in the field of cinema, stressing that the festival is not limited to cinematic performances, but rather represents a platform for dialogue and cultural exchange and building bridges of cooperation between creative people from different countries of the world, in addition to its role in enhancing citizens’ awareness that protecting the environment begins with daily behavior and social responsibility.

The festival also witnessed the honoring of a number of cinema and art icons in recognition of their contributions to the artistic and cultural field, as Dr. Medhat El-Adl, the artist Dalia Mostafa, and the great director Ali Badrakhan were honored in recognition of their distinguished contributions and long career. With the achievements that contributed to promoting culture and art and linking them to environmental issues.
The festival includes a distinguished group of documentary and creative films that reflect the relationship between art and the environment, the most prominent of which is the documentary “Maal Qarun” Directed by Muhannad Diab, and screenings of Qarun platform films and workshops, accompanied by the distribution of certificates to participants. The festival’s activities also organize specialized seminars such as “Integrating Green Cinema and Fayoum as an open filming location,” and Tribal Talks with directors Nour El-Din Sherif and Hamsa Mansour, in addition to Misr Al-Kheir Foundation sessions on women, religion, and climate justice, and Organic Egypt seminars on the role of women in organic agriculture, the circular economy, women, and justice.
