The United Nations launches the process of electing a new Secretary-General

Yesterday, the process of electing the new Secretary-General of the United Nations officially began, after member states were asked to submit names of candidates to assume the position starting January 1, 2027, to replace the current Secretary-General António Guterres, whose term expires at the end of 2026.

In a joint letter, the 15-nation Security Council and the president of the 193-nation General Assembly called for nominations, marking the start of the race to succeed Guterres as secretary-general of the international body.

The UN Security Council will formally recommend a candidate to the General Assembly for election as the tenth Secretary-General of the United Nations later next year.
