Karama Crossing: Facilities for the entry of cement only… and preventing Palestinian products from being exported

After weeks of almost complete closure, the competent Israeli authorities announced the partial opening of the Karama “Allenby” crossing. As of next Sunday, it is limited to the entry of only one material, which is bulk cement.
The decision includes allowing the entry of about 40 Jordanian trucks daily, loaded with cement, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while restrictions on the rest of the goods and materials continue.
This limited exception has raised broad questions about its background and goals, especially in light of the continued disruption of hundreds of other vital items. Observers believe that Israel is following a policy of “gradual control” In the sectors of the Palestinian economy, with a special focus on the construction sector, which is one of the most prominent engines of growth and a source of income for tens of thousands of workers. The direct beneficiaries of this step are cement importers and contracting companies, but on the other hand, the decision not to allow Palestinian goods to exit through the crossing continues to deal a severe blow to national exports.
Palestinian companies lost their contracts with Arab and international markets after the orders were unable to be fulfilled on time, causing huge financial losses and a loss of trust between exporters and importers, which was considered a serious violation against the national product. Despite the importance of partially opening the crossing, experts stress that remaining suspended exports means paralysis in the production cycle, especially for sectors that depend on exports as a main source of income, such as the stone industry, clothing, and agricultural products.
They stress that real economic recovery only begins with the restoration of full commercial movement, in and out, through all crossings.
