"UNESCO": The Intangible Heritage Committee will convene next December to study nominations for inclusion in the Convention’s lists

 The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will hold the twentieth session of the Committee on the Intangible Cultural Heritage in New Delhi, next December 7, and from December 8 to 13, it will study new nominations for inclusion in the lists of the Convention and listed cases that need preservation, and expand the scope of some of them to include other States Parties.

 

According to the organization’s statement, it is scheduled that the 24 member states of the Committee will study, Which represents all States Parties to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, 68 new nominations, and UNESCO reserves In accordance with the Convention, three international lists currently include 788 elements in 150 countries.

The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity recognizes and promotes the diversity of cultural practices and experiences practiced by societies, and the Committee is scheduled to review 54 nominations for this list (including 6 requests for extensions of elements previously included). The list identifies intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent conservation for elements of living heritage that are in danger of extinction, and enables States parties to the Convention to mobilize international cooperation and assistance. Among the nominations that the committee is scheduled to consider for inclusion on the Intangible Heritage List are the koshari meal from Egypt as a popular street food and the culinary traditions surrounding its preparation and sharing, the art of Cuban sonne, a musical and dance tradition that combines singing, musical instruments, rhythm and movement, highlife music and dance in Ghana, which is a popular form of musical expression and storytelling, and the Haitian kompas, a music and dance genre that combines African and European influences and populations. And Deepawali in India, which is the festival of lights that symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, and Italian cooking between sustainability and biocultural diversity.

The committee will also study the inclusion of swimming pool culture in Iceland, especially the widespread use of outdoor heated pools, the Japanese handmade paper craft “Washi”, Tsabiki, which is a rhythm and musical style that characterizes the southwestern region of Madagascar, and yodeling in Switzerland, which is a distinctive singing style rooted in Alpine culture, and other nominations. From several countries.

It reflects the role played by intangible cultural heritage in transmitting these irreplaceable cultural practices between generations, as UNESCO considers The African continent is one of its priorities in preserving intangible cultural heritage, as 39 African countries have so far included its elements on the list, while 10 new nominations were submitted from the continent during the current year.
