المملكة: Officially… Riyadh is the first Saudi city to join the Global Cities Network


Published The Royal Commission for the City of Riyadh, the city’s first local voluntary report on the United Nationsfor Sustainable Development (UN DESA); To be RiyadhThis is the first Saudi city to officially join the Global Cities Network, which is reviewing its development performance and contributing to achieving sustainable development goals at the urban level.

This step comes in implementation of the directives of the wise leadership – may God protect them – to highlight the role of cities and regions in localizing sustainable development goals, and in line with the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 in building more sustainable and prosperous cities.

The report reflects the progress it has achieved. Riyadh in vital areas including health, education, transportation, and quality of life. The report also indicates a noticeable improvement in the decline in the traffic accident death rate from 15 deaths per 100,000 people in 2019 to 5.2 deaths in 2022.

Reduced crime rate

The use of traffic camera systems increased by 320%, 12.3 million trucks were inspected at weigh stations, in addition to the establishment of three new (911) security operations centers.

The percentage of the population living less than 300 meters of public space from 28% in 2019 to 35% in 2022, and the percentage among young people increased from 3.8% to 15%.

With regard to urban security, the city of Riyadh recorded an average of 1.05 crimes per 100,000 people, which is one of the lowest rates in the world compared to 2 in Paris and 5 in New York, with the rate of violent crimes decreasing to 99 crimes per 100,000. Nessma.

Global Development Trends

The report embodies Riyadh’s commitment to aligning its local priorities with global development trends, through broad partnerships with more than 46 entities from the government, private, and non-profit sectors. It was prepared according to a participatory methodology that reflects the city’s institutional governance model in sustainable urban planning, and is keen to build a solid knowledge base that supports decision-making.

The inclusion of the report in the voluntary city reviews at the United Nations is a qualitative step. It enhances Riyadh’s position as an urban capital on the international map, and opens broader horizons for building international partnerships, exchanging experiences, and expanding the scope of the Kingdom’s development influence at the local and global levels.
