المملكة: A rare 15-hour surgery saves a fifty-year-old man from a complex colon tumor in Mecca

The Medical City explained that the patient had visited a number of oncology centers inside and outside the Kingdom, and the tumor was classified in previous stages as inoperable due to its extensive spread in the organs of the abdominal cavity and liver of the fourth degree, before his condition was immediately examined by a multidisciplinary medical team, after which a precise treatment plan was developed for him. She began several sessions of chemotherapy, followed by complex surgical intervention.
Colectomy
It showed that the operation required complete removal of the colon and parts of Small intestine with reconnection, in addition to resection of the spleen, a large part of the pancreas, most of the stomach, part of the urinary bladder, the diaphragm, and the muscular abdominal wall, in addition to the resection of the first lobe of the liver with part of the inferior vena cava below it, as well as the third and sixth lobes of the liver, in addition to the complete resection of the peritoneum, due to the high tumor density factor, which reached 39, which is the highest number for the degree of intra-abdominal spread.The operation was performed by a surgical oncology team led by Surgical oncology consultant, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Zahrani, with the participation of Dr. Sayed Assem and Dr. Ihab Al-Saqqaf, while the head of the department, Dr. Sumaya Malibari, took over the anesthesia.
The city added that the operation was followed by a complete immersion of the cavity Abdomen with hyperthermic chemotherapy using the HIPC technique for an hour and a half, followed by reconstructing the digestive system starting from the remaining part of the stomach to the end of the rectum, in one of the most precise and complex stages of the operation, due to the high possibility of leakage due to the size of the surgical intervention and chemotherapy before and during the operation.
The success of the operation
She confirmed that the operation was successful without recording any significant complications, and the patient left the hospital after eight days in a stable health condition, in preparation for completing the treatment plan with intravenous chemotherapy according to the previously prepared program, in light of the complete eradication of the tumors.This achievement is an extension of King Abdullah Medical City’s leadership in performing this type of delicate and complex operations for patients referred from inside and outside the Kingdom, as the surgical team highlights the results of these operations at international conferences annually, as One of the world’s most prominent teams specialized in complex oncology surgeries, in an operational integration that brings together surgery, anesthesia, and intensive care, in line with the health transformation goals within the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
