Alawiya Jamil, the domineering theater icon and El-Meligy’s wife for four decades
Today, December 15, 2025, is the birthday of the great artist Alawiya Jamil, one of the pioneers of Arab theatre, who was born under the name “Elia Sabat Khalil Majdalani.” In 1910.
Alawiya Jamil’s artistic career began at an early age, when in 1925 she joined the “Ramses” band. Led by Youssef Wehbe, who chose its artistic name for it.
It has enriched the stage with many works, including “Al-Watan” and “Rasputin,” and moved between ancient theater groups such as George Abyad and Aziz Eid.
– The Strong Lady of the Screen: Alawiya Jamil’s name was associated in the minds of the audience with her distinctive embodiment of the character of a domineering and strong woman who imposes her decisions, and this was evident in her prominent films such as “Berlanti” And “Laila, the daughter of the rich.”
– The duo of love and art: The late artist married the artist Mahmoud El-Meligy after a great love story, and they lived together for more than forty years until his passing in 1983.
The couple formed one of the most famous duos in the history of Egyptian cinema, even though her work with El-Melegy was few, and she appeared in it. Sometimes in roles different from her usual personality, as in the movie “Shabab Al-Youm.”
Her first movie: Alawiya Jamil participated in her first cinematic work, which was the movie “Zeinab.” In 1930, one of her most famous works is the film “Happy Day”. “1940” With Mohamed Abdel Wahab, which witnessed the first appearance of the artist Faten Hamama when she was a child.
Alawiya Jamil retired from art in the mid-sixties of the last century, and stopped participating artistically after presenting a single dramatic work, the series “The Black Cat”.
The artist left our world at her home on August 16, 1994.
